Messages Found in the Garden: God Didn’t Make Me a Butterfly
God didn’t make me
a butterfly
Until I accept and own
the God design of who I am,
I cannot stop comparing,
classifying and price-tagging
differences that judge and qualify
my God-designed soul jacket
wrapped around
my God-designed story.
There’s no peace
in diminishing God’s work,
no joy or trust,
no kindness or peace,
No God-love
in Thinkology like that

God didn’t make me
a butterfly
God chose my starting point,
birthing me into a southern
small town on a city’s edge
. . . the heaven-gaining destination
my story’s end.
From eye, hair, skin color
to the girl The Creator intentionally
designed me to be,
from love languages to the God-designed
humor and strengths,
talents and gifts He placed within,
all designed for fulfillment, for grace,
for the love of Him who created me
and you.
None of us are mistakes
of creation.

No, God didn’t make me
a butterfly
Just as He knew each challenge
I would face,
each failing,
each temptation for wrongness,
each act of goodness,
even the confusion about
the God-designed plan
of who I walk out each day,
He designed each redemption
opportunity
each salvation moment
each personal soul-building exercise
to help climb the God-designed
ladder from the worst of myself
to the best of Him.

God didn’t make me
a butterfly
There’s no getting off
the hard ground
to soar
until I accept and own
the God design of who I am.
When I see myself
through God’s eyes,
and I discover beauty within
and without
and that’s when I find myself
glad
God didn’t make me
a butterfly

“Oh yes, you shaped me first inside, then out;
you formed me in my mother’s womb.
I thank you, High God—you’re breathtaking!
Body and soul, I am marvelously made!
I worship in adoration—what a creation!
You know me inside and out,
you know every bone in my body;
You know exactly how I was made, bit by bit,
how I was sculpted from nothing into something.
Like an open book, you watched me grow from conception to birth;
all the stages of my life were spread out before you,
The days of my life all prepared
before I’d even lived one day” ~ Psalm 139: 13-16

“Accept and own” those words ring for me. Thanks for sharing.
“He Who began a good work”. . . beautiful, Maryleigh!
What a beautiful poem, Maryleigh. I always admire those who can write poetry. May the Lord bless you and your words!
I spent 10 minutes trying to get a good picture of a beautiful butterfly this morning just outside the office, and now I come here and read this. God really does love to get my attention.
I love this. 🙂 What a lovely perspective on our identity in Christ, and a gentle rebuke for those times when I’m tempted to long for some trait that He didn’t give me. Thank you for sharing with us at Grace & Truth!
