Slowing Down to Catch Up
I’m not going to rush this week. I’ve been in a careen too long this autumn season. This week I’m not pushing the pause button – I’m going to let the hurry go on past me while I
linger over the grands that come to my house
and read the good books
and walk out to the garden
especially if Frost covers the path,
roll out sugar cookies
let them be
the apple of my eye.

pare the tempo of movement in the kitchen
banish hurry’s tripping, harassing ways
making room for
grace in the making and baking
of Normandy Pies and Cranberry Cheesecakes
while green beans slow simmer to deliciousness
and the turkey waits tucked away with the oysters
and apples.

Slow the twirl to turn a page with a cup of wild apple ginger tea
hold a hand on a Tennessee trail
with my Forever Man leading the way
Find time for this green-eyed girl
to look into her hazel-eyed sweet-heart’s eyes.
letting Monday, Tuesday, all the days
this week
feel like a slow Sunday afternoon.

Savor the cadence of each voice
the laughter
the quiet
and the different kinds of loud
the loud of boys grown up
of little boys making themselves heard
so we don’t forget
to pay attention
to the important stuff.

Linger, Pare the Tempo, Savor,
slow the twirl to turn
my mind to remembrance
remembrance of God’s blessings of the day,
of the year
all the saving, all the redeeming,
all the forgiving, all the hope,
all the love, protection and provision
the wait for the answered prayer,
and the prayer answered.
the standing with me,
seeing me,
and storing each teardrop
in a bottle
and the joy of the Lord
that is my strength
and His joy when I turn
all that remembrance
into Thanksgiving.
No dashing, darting, making haste that leaves me frazzled, worn, too tired to enjoy. This week, I’m slowing down to catch up! What do you hope to find when you let the hurry pass you by? What will you catch up to when you slow down?
What a wonderful way to pass the time.
What exquisite irony to slam on the brakes at the beginning of this break-neck season. I am going to carry a bit of this in my heart for today’s pacing.
Love this and so needed by so many of us!! Well articulated and motivating to follow your example.
I loved this > “letting Monday, Tuesday, all the days this week feel like a slow Sunday afternoon.” Amen! Sunday afternoons are the best! Have a Happy Thanksgiving, Maryleigh!
So beautiful Maryleigh. Wishing a Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family. Blessings.
So beautiful, Maryleigh. I can feel the slow take care of the hurry. I can touch the pulse winding down to a quiet. I can enjoy the week with you in my mind and heart, and maybe even allow slow to linger longer than Thanksgiving.
May your week and especially Thanksgiving Day be sweet and fine with your dear family.
Caring though Christ, ~ l
This. Is. Beautiful. I am joining you this year Maryleigh! I need more of this kind of living, or rather lingering in my life too!!! Thank you for reminding me of the beauty of letting the rush go on by….
