Journaling Autumn: Stillness in the Battle
I’ve debated with myself on whether to publish this now or after the battle is wrapped up, when the final field report from the battle has been filed, and God’s manner of victory revealed, whether it be a David resolution, where He fought the good fight and now could only go to the child who had gone on to God, or whether it would be a Jairus victory with life restored. There is something important about shamelessly trusting God in the battle–not in 20-20 hindsight, and that He has the all-is-well plan though I only know the right-now of it–and I am grateful that when I keep my eyes on Him, He walks me through the journey of this season.
“. . . and that all this assembly may know
that the Lord saves
not with sword and spear.
For the battle is the Lord’s,
and he will give you into our hand.”
~ 1 Samuel 17:47
I saw that the week was blue sky beautiful, but there was no opportunity to step into the cool air sun-warmed. I watched from the inside looking out. Inside a hospital hive, my husband and I found ourselves busy waiting. . . waiting for prior authorization for a immunotherapy drug that genetically fights cancer, eradicating the enemy within.
Satan doesn’t take kindly to those that move to re-take the land he has claimed through theft, stealth, and deception. Unconditional generosity of spirit is not in his tool box.
In the battle God provides tasks and stillness. Discernment is required for the timing of both. God gives us tasks for the battle, tasks that require determination, willingness to knock on doors, kindness in both the opening and closing of those doors. Recognizing that sometimes God expects us to go out of the box and be uncomfortable, trusting even when the task assigned isn’t easily achieved or work itself out according to our preconceived expectations is sometimes crucial. Yet, God’s stillness isn’t found in the tasks. Keeping eyes on Him while doing the tasks, yes! Trusting while we do what He has called us to do–and in the outcome–Yes!
Prior approval finally came after 5 days in the hospital in this 4th hospital stay. I received permission to pick up this life-saving drug from a pharmacy about two miles from the hospital instead of waiting for a Tuesday delivery four days later. Then I followed up, making sure heart, pulmonary and oncology had what they needed—and had to wait yet one more day for a blood pressure med switch. A righteous-riled-up-ness didn’t just nudge me just nudge me to complete these tasks. It propelled me to action. It is something I have learned to recognize and heed. He’s riled me up before–before the birth of my last son is one of those times.
Saturday morning, the oncologist assigned to give the three pills was an hour late. When she walked to the door, overwhelm, joy, relief hit me. I burst into tears, sobbing tears. My youngest son hugged me through that moment at the end of the hallway.
In the crazy, literal and figurative, crazy of the week, God tasked me to be brave, ask, and do—not do everything, only what He nudged, pushed, led me to do.
He doesn’t need a bio-medicine to heal my husband. How He chooses to answer my prayer is not my business, though I am His business. Even if He chooses not to answer my prayer—it’s still not my business. Trusting Him is my business. Completing the tasks He’s given me in the manner His children are expected to behave is my business.
So where does the stillness fit in a battle? Moses held his hands up to the Lord during the battle with the Amalekites. When he wearied, his friends made a place for Him to sit and held his arms up for him. Moses watched the battle, lifting His hands up, trusting God. He completed all the tasks up to that moment–then sat, hands lifted, watching God fight the battle. Stillness comes, not in the tasks, not in the swinging of swords. Stillness comes when cast our hands up, our eyes upon Him. Tasks completed, I lift my hands and eyes up to Him, watching as He fights this battle.
In this first week of Autumn, I find myself trusting, being still, watching Him fight this battle.
- Trust Him, even when it doesn’t make sense
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart,
and do not lean on your own understanding.”
~ Proverbs 3:5
“The Lord is my strength and my shield;
in him my heart trusts, and I am helped;
my heart exults,
and with my song I give thanks to him”
~ Psalm 28:7 - Be Still. . . . inside and out
“The LORD will fight for you;
you need only to be still.”
Exodus 14:14
““Be still,
and know that I am God.
I will be exalted among the nations,
I will be exalted in the earth!”
~Psalm 46:10 - While I’m being still in the shadow of His wing,I am to watch Him fight the battle—however He chooses—and tell the story of what He has done.
“How precious is Your loving devotion,
O God, that the children of men take refuge
in the shadow of Your wings.”
~ Psalm 36:7
“Be merciful to me,
O God, be merciful,
for in You my soul takes refuge.
In the shadow of Your wings
I will take shelter
until the danger has passed.”
~ Psalm 58:1
“And Moses said to the people,
‘Do not be afraid.
Stand still,
and see the salvation of the Lord,
which He will accomplish for you today.
For the Egyptians whom you see today,
you shall see again no more forever.
The Lord will fight for you,
and you shall hold your peace.’”
~~Exodus 14:13-13
“And the Lord shall help them,
and deliver them:
he shall deliver them from the wicked,
and save them, because they trust in him.”
~ Psalm 37:40
It’s supposed to warm up this week. Summer is trying to reclaim lost territory. A refreshing is in the forecast. Whatever way the winds blow or the rains fall, regardless of the barometric pressure forecasts, I will shamelessly trust, be still, and watch what God’s doing!
Remember Me Monday: #141 Link-up
“I’ll make a list of God’s gracious dealings,
all the things God has done that need praising,
All the generous bounties of God,
his great goodness to the family of Israel—
Compassion lavished,
. love extravagant.”
~ Isaiah 63:7, The Message
In the Old Testament, God repeatedly, quietly and loudly, tells his children, “You have forgotten me!” (Jeremiah 3:32, Ezekiel 22:12, to name a few). It’s a heart cry from a father to a child who has forgotten all the love, all the saving, helping, little and big blessings – and it leaves me stunned when I realize our Father, the creator of the universe, who knows things I cannot begin to fathom, who authors storylines that leave me amazed, delights in all of us so much, He cries out, “Remember Me.”
While every day is a Remember God Day, I am inviting you to join me on Monday mornings to come by and remember what God has done for you, for your family. Maybe God sent a cardinal darting out in front of you, as if to tell you, “I’m here,” or broke a child’s fever after you laid it all down at His feet in a 2 a.m. bedside vigil. Maybe He stood with you in the wait of a prayer sent out, or brought someone you loved to Christ. Maybe He healed your broken heart, gave your courage, or you gave Him your dreams as a love offering only to have Him give them back in an unimaginable way. Maybe God helped you survive to bedtime after a crazy Monday, or forgive yourself for missing it with your kiddos –– Whatever it is, let’s Remember Him. . . in a “Remember Me Monday” love letter.
“My mouth will tell of your righteousness,
Of your salvation all the day long,
Though I know not its measure.
I will come and proclaim your mighty acts, O Sovereign Lord”
~ Psalm 71:15-16.

Praying for your husband, for you, and for your family. May the Lord keep you strong, and keep providing all that you need. {{hugs}}
Maryleigh, as I was praying for you, your husband, and your family, this scripture came to my heart,
But these things I plan won’t happen right away. Slowly, steadily, surely, the time approaches when the vision will be fulfilled. If it seems slow, do not despair, for these things will surely come to pass. Just be patient! They will not be overdue a single day!—Habakkuk 2:3 TLB
Many blessings to you and your precious family.
Oh my dear, you are having to learn all this in such a hard school and I am so sorry. Praying still for stamina and a sinewy faith as you keep on trusting.
Praying for your husband and you. 🙏❤️🙏
